Challenger 605

As this was the first time we had ever designed a jet, we wanted to raise the benchmark on other private-jet interiors which were highly conventional, with thick carpeting, leather and a lack of quality and styling. They simply hadn’t advanced in the way home interiors had.

Our clients were company directors, it was a company jet and potentially somewhere one might spend a long time, so the palette had to be understated: tonal, earthy and calming.

There were limitations in the materials we could use due to fire rating and crashproof-testing, and also in structures. We changed the seat squab (the panels in the seat) and backrest design, remoulding the foam and changing the upholstery and the stitching on the bolsters. It was very subtle, but it was a revelation to the manufacturers, who had never considered doing things in such a simple way.
